“The Blessed Lord said: I instructed this imperishable science of yoga to the sun-god, Vivasvān, and Vivasvāninstructed it to Manu, the father of mankind, and Manu in turn instructed it to Ikṣvāku.”
—Lord Śrī Krishna, BG 4.1

“Whenever and wherever there is a decline in religious practice, O descendant of Bharata, and a predominantrise of irreligion — at that time I descend Myself. In order to deliver the pious and to annihilate the miscreants,as well as to reestablish the principles of religion, I advent Myself millennium after millennium.”—BG 4.7-8

In the Yoga Sūtras, Patañjali is speaking about the Lord. But in the Bhagavad-gītā the Lord Himself is speakingand He is doing so to awaken all of us from the slumber of material identification. God never condemns anyone to hell forever. Each one of us matters too much to Him and He is always ready to give us another chance. He has been waiting for us forever and He is not going to let us go.
